Volkswagen stops the development of natural gas engines CNG. Needs to concentrate on the electric cars

According to the German Handelsblatt, the German Volkswagen group will stop the development of compressed natural gas (CNG) engines. He needs and wants to focus on electromobility.

Gas cars have long been paying a useful addition to the offer. They have low consumption, low pollutant emissions and CO2 emissions, so they help to meet the 95 grams limit of carbon dioxide emitted by the European Union from car manufacturers this year. CNG vehicles were offered by the Group within the Seat, Skoda, VW and Audi brands.

The head of development documents his claims on the numbers. With 100 kW of electric energy, a battery-powered electric car will travel 500 kilometers, but hydrogen will only be produced for 200 kilometers with the same amount of electricity and eighty for synthetic fuels. "So, in the foreseeable future, you will not see any fuel cell serial vehicles from our passenger car brands," Welsch said. Hydrogen research will remain at the theoretical level at VW.

In addition to VW, the Swedish Volvo is one of the advocates of a single technology. His boss Håkan Samuelsson told German journalists recently: "It would not be good for customers to offer them two very different technical solutions for sustainable mobility."
